Excerpts from pupils' work (Sandwich-making competition)
(Michael Lee):
Suddenly, Tom yelled in pain and his eyes welled up in tears. I quickly turned around. To my horror, I saw blood dripping down his finger. Oh no! I also noticed his hand was clammy and perspiration dripping from his forehead. John, being the timid one, shrank back in fear. Instantly, Mrs Lee, the teacher in-charge, whipped out her mobile phone and called the ambulance.
That day’s event had such a profound effect on me. It would be indelibly etched in my mind for many years to come. I learn from this lesson that I have to be more careful in handling sharp and dangerous objects.
(Cheah Sziyang):
We hurriedly carried Tom to the First Aid tent and waited anxiously while the organisers administered first aid to him. After ten minutes, Tom came out of the tent and shared with us the details of the accident. He had spilled a bottle of oil and got his hands very oily. While holding a knife, it slipped off his oily hands and stabbed him in the foot.
With the short time left, we could not make our intended sandwich. In the end, although we did not win the tastiest sandwich category, we won for another category – teamwork, friendship and sportsmanship. A competition is not entirely about winning, it is also about participation and giving your best for the team.
(Joshua Khaw):
We had spent all our pocket money buying the freshest and finest ingredients to make that sandwich as good as it could be. Then, the moment of truth arrived. The taster took a small bite from it. “This is the best sandwich I have ever tasted!” he exclaimed. “First prize!”
We were overjoyed and hugged one another while the other groups stared at us with scorn in their eyes. “And the first prize goes to the team from FM..RING!...” the announcer was interrupted by the fire alarm. All of a sudden, a blazing inferno started to spread.
(Cleo Tan):
One of us chopped the onions and tomatoes. The other cut the lettuce and the wholemeal bread. I mixed the tuna with my grandmother’s secret recipe sauce with the chopped ingredients. Thereafter, we decorated the sandwiches with some slices of fruits. After the final touches, the sandwiches not only looked delicious, they only smelled yummy.
(Yue Sinn):
Everything went on well until we detected a faint whiff of smoke. Then, we saw the competitors running in all directions. They looked as if they were running for their lives. A fire had broken out. From a distance, we could see thick black smoke engulfed the air. All of us scurried out of the canteen under the watchful eyes of the organisers.
The firefighters rushed out of their trucks with long rubber hoses. Desperately, they fought the raging inferno. Their faces were covered with soot and sweat with the heat getting unbearably terrifying. Minutes later, the blaze was finally doused out.

Tea Chapter 6 Oct 09
We made paper lanterns, learnt the art of tea brewing and drinking and ate mooncakes. I thought the tea eggs ($1), kachang puteh ($1) and cream puff ($2) were expensive but many pupils still rushed to buy them. Are they really that hungry?
